Day 10 (Oct 9) game:  Spain 3 Uruguay 0

Stylish Spain top Group D

A 3-0 win over Uruguay ensured that Spain pipped Iran to top spot in Group D on goal difference and avoid Brazil in the second group phase.

Spain coach Venancio Lopez must have felt confident going into this match as he rested key men Luis Amado and Kike. His decision paid off as La Furia Roja were good value for their victory over a stubborn and hardworking Uruguayan outfit.

Two goals either side of half-time effectively sealed the outcome of this match. Javi Rodriguez turned the ball in from a corner in the 19th minute for his third goal of the tournament, while Fernando doubled Spain's advantage in the 21st minute, again from a corner kick.

Spain saw the opportunity to kill the game off with a knockout blow and that came just a minute later when Fernando's shot from close range flew past Diego.

Despite Uruguay pressing forward for a consolation, it was not to be and the South Americans head home with just one point to show for their efforts. Spain, on the other hand, who have not conceded a goal in over three and a half games now have their attentions on the next round.

Venancio Lopez, Spain coach
Uruguay defended very well and it was hard for us to create clear openings, but today the most important thing was the result. Are we favourites? We don't see ourselves that way. At the moment we're only thinking about the Russia game, which is key because they're our first second-phase opponents. If we want to reach the semi-finals we have to take it one game at a time.

Gustavo Sanchez, Uruguay coach

Today's match was very important because we went toe-to-toe with the world champions, defending well and creating goalscoring chances. The tournament as a whole has been a great opportunity for this squad of young players. Given time, I'm sure we'll continue to improve.

Day 8 (oct 7)game: Iran 4 Uruguay 2

Iran control their destiny

Iran moved level on points with Spain at the top of Group D following their 4-2 victory over Uruguay at the Maracanazinho.

After ten minutes Iran found themselves two goals up. Mohammad Taheri netted the first from close range after Diego failed to hold on to a shot. Their second was a bit more polished; Mostafa Tayyebi flicking the ball over the goalkeeper.

Uruguay pulled one back, perhaps more out of will than skill, when Jorge Rodriguez purposeful run into the box was checked by Mostafa Nazari. A penalty was awarded and Mincho made no mistake.

But the game moved further away from Uruguay in the second half. They quickly took control the game and scored twice through Vahid Shamsaee and Mohammad Hashemzadeh following good approach play from the Asians.

Uruguay pulled one back through Rodríguez, but it was scant consolation for the team, who now exit the tournament. Iran's destiny is in their own hands. A win or draw against Czech Republic will see them advance.

Day 4 (Oct 3)game: Czech 4 Uruguay 1

Czechs check-in with win

Czech Republic got their FIFA Futsal World Cup campaign off to a flying start with a convincing 4-1 victory over Uruguay at the Maracanazinho.

From the first whistle, it was obvious that this would be a closely fought match and while Czech Republic shaded the game in terms of possession, the final score was not a true reflection of the even encounter in Rio de Janeiro.

With Uruguay switching off at the back, Roman Mares had the game's first real chance and after eight minutes it was the same player who gave his side the lead. That lasted for just nine minutes when Seba's scored from a rebounf.

Tomas Sluka made it 2-1 to Czech Republic five minutes after the re-start, but the goal appeared to galvanise Uruguay, who abandoned their counter-attacking tactics and went on the offensive. But as they poured men forward, gaps appeared at the back and Zdenek Slama took advantage of a wonderful assist by Mares to restore their two-goal cushion.

The South Americans never gave up but found Czech keeper Tomas Meller in inspired form and the final minute of an entertaining match provided even more drama when David Filinger scored from the second penalty spot and Pablo Lanza was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

David Fillinger, Czech Republic player
We're delighted to have won our first game. This should motivate us for what is still to come, as this is the toughest group. Now it's time for us to prepare for the game against Spain, where a draw would feel like a win for us.

Seba, Uruguay player
In a World Cup you cannot commit the kind of schoolboy mistakes we made today, which they duly punished us for. Now we have to beat Iran and hope for the best.

Gustavo Sanchez, Uruguay coach
We need to find our why they were so much better than us in the second half. That said, this is all good experience for the future.

Day 2 game: Uruguay 3 Libya 3

Libya make their point

A last-gasp equalizer from Fathi Alkhoga gave Libya a point in their match with Uruguay in Group D of Brazil 2008 at the Maracanazinho. The goal came as a sickening blow to the South Americans who dominated the match, but ultimately paid the price for missing too many chances.

This was a match played at a quick tempo, with both sides looking to break forward at every opportunity, but whereas the Libyans enjoyed the lion's share of possession, it was Uruguay who always looked the more likely to score. Indeed, the reason why the game was not out of reach for Libya in the first half was due to some excellent goalkeeping from Mohamed Al Sharif.

He was helpless to stop Juan Custodio's early goal and when Daniel Laurino made it 2-0 shortly after half-time, things looked bad. However, they stayed in the hunt through Rabie Abdel, but when Diego Garrido made it 3-1 with just nine minutes remaining; it looked like the points were heading to Uruguay.

However, the Libyans never gave up and when Alkhoga headed home in the final seconds, it capped a remarkable fightback.
