Day 7 (Oct 6) game: Portugal 8 USA 1

Portugal cruise against USA

Portugal thrashed the already eliminated USA 8-1 at the Maracanazinho, and moved a step closer to the next round in the process.

The Iberians found themselves 2-0 up inside the opening three minutes using the same formula, an assist from Arnaldo and a goal from Leitao. They looked completely dominant; pacy, precise and with a real cutting edge.

Although Portugal kept up the pressure, they soon found it tough to create chances and gave the USA a chance to get into the game. However, the Americans could not take their opportunity and the game fell away from them even further when Goncalo fired home just 30 seconds into the second half.

Arnaldo, Jardel, Bibi, Cardinal and Leitao all grabbed goals in the final 20 minutes as Portugal produced a wonderful exhibition of football and there was even time for Leitao to complete his hat-trick. Sandre Namouski's 36th minute goal was scant consolation for the US.

Portugal now meet Thailand in Brasilia on Wednesday hoping to qualify for the second round, while USA head home after suffering four defeats in their four matches played at this year's tournament.

Day 5 (Oct 4) game: Thailand 5 USA 3

Thailand cashes in on timely goals

Rio de Janeiro -- Thailand broke open a close game by scoring two goals a minute apart to record a 5-3 Group B win over the United States in the FIFA Futsal World Cup™ Saturday.

The result kept Thailand (1-0-1, 3 points) in the hunt for the final phase while the USA (0-0-3, 0) was eliminated at Maracanazhino.

The USA had the game's first clear chance, but goalkeeper Surapong Tompa stopped Denison Cabral's penalty kick with his face.

The Thais took control by scoring twice within a short span as Eakapong Suratsawang connected off a counter-attack in the 14th minute and Prasert Innui (after a set piece from a corner kick in the 16th minute.

The Americans closed the gap as Mike Apple found the back of the net just before the halftime whistle in the 20th minute. Apple turned playmaker,
setting up Cabral's equalizer two minutes into the second half.

But Thailand again took over the game for good, again with two quick goals, off a counterattack and a set piece -- Lertchai Issarasuwipakorn in the 29th minute and Panuwat Janta in the 30th minute.

Sermphan Khmthinkaew gave the Thais a two-goal bulge in the 39th minute before the USA's Pat Morris closed out the scoring in the final minute.

The U.S. Futsal National Team saw its dreams of qualification for the second round of the FIFA Futsal World Cup come to an end against Thailand on Saturday with a 5-3 loss in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Keith Tozer's side put up a spirited effort, fighting back to tie the match early in the second half after falling behind by two goals, but couldn’t hold back the deserving Thai side.

Despite the loss, the U.S. will still play one more group game against Portugal on Monday, Oct. 6. Kickoff for the game is at 9:30 a.m. ET and can be seen tape delayed on Galavision at 12:30 a.m. ET on Oct. 7.

“I thought we did a great job to fight back for those two goals, but individually we broke down on defense with some mistakes,” said Tozer. “It's disappointing because it has happened to us in the first two games as well. [After Thailand's 3rd goal] We all felt like we could fight back because we dug out of that two goal hole from the first half. Thailand were sharper though and they hurt is with their speed and counter attack.”

The U.S. came into the game knowing that a win would keep their hopes of qualification alive, and they had the first opportunity to take the lead. Matthew Stewart burst into the Thailand box before being taken down, and the U.S. was rightly awarded a penalty.

From just 5 meters away, saving a penalty in Futsal requires courage more than anything, and Thai goalkeeper Surapong Tompa showed just that, using his face to keep out Denison Cabral's driven shot.

The penalty save swung the momentum in Thailand's favor and The War Elephants got on the board in the 14th minute. A U.S. giveaway sparked a quick Thailand counterattack, with Lertchai Issarasuwipakorn feeding Eakapong Suratsawang, who completed the slick move by finishing under goalkeeper Nick Vorberg.

Soon Thailand were two up, with Prasert Innui knocking in a pass from Sermphan Khumthinkaew.

The U.S. was searching for a response, and just before halftime they got the boost that they needed. Stewart, generally the most dangerous U.S. player, fed Mike Apple with a beautiful diagonal pass, and Apple's onetime finish cut the Thailand lead in half.

With the goal coming with just five seconds to go until halftime, the U.S. knew they would want to carry that energy through into the second period. From the whistle, Tozer's side pressured Thailand and soon the energetic display paid off.

Apple led a counterattack for the U.S. before squaring it to Cabral at the top of the area. Still with lots to do, Cabral finished the move delightfully, chipping over the goalkeeper to even the score.

From there it was anybody's game, and the teams traded shots until the U.S. was undone again by its usually reliable defense. Mistakes have plagued the U.S. throughout this FIFA Futsal World Cup, and against Thailand, the outcome was unfortunately similar.

Thailand's third goal was produced after Issarasuwipakorn was able to find space and finished Natthapon Suttiroj's pass at the far post.

Knowing that three valuable points were within range, Thailand were galvanized and soon extended their lead when Panuwat Janta knocked home a corner kick by Eakapong Suratsawang.

With the U.S. pushing for a goal, The Elephants iced the game through Khumthinkaew's low near post shot. There was still time for Pat Morris to grab a goal from Ptah Myers' inbounds pass, but it was too little, too late.

Day 3 (Oct 2) game: USA 1  ITALY 6

Joy of six for Italy

Italy, the runners-up at the FIFA Futsal World Cup Chinese Taipei four years ago, looked impressive at the Maracanazhino today as they came from behind to beat USA 6-1 in the Group B encounter.

With Sandro Zanetti and Adriano Foglia once again looking threatening in attack, it was somewhat surprising when Andy Rosenband put the USA ahead with just five minutes on the clock. However, the Europeans went into the half-time interval ahead thanks to goals from their influential striking duo.

It was largely the same story in the second half. USA did have chances to equalize, but when Patrick Nora's deflected shot found the back of the net, their hopes of sharing the spoils ended. Grana's second penalty in as many games, plus goals from Edgar Bertoni and Saad Assis completed the rout.

Italy and USA meet Portugal and Thailand respectively in their penultimate Group B games on Sunday.

Adriano Foglia, Italy player
Today we showed our potential against a physically strong team. We played well and picked up another win, and that will do our morale a power of good following the criticism we got after the Thailand match.

Alexandre Feller, Italy goalkeeper
The team was more relaxed and we played better, but that doesn't mean to say it was an easy game. Now we've got to start thinking about our next games, which are the tough ones.

Pat Morris, USA player
The only thing we can do now is play the games we've got left and do our country proud.

Denison Cabral and Jamar Beasley are unavailable for the U.S. today, while Pat Morris is the only active player carrying a booking.

Six unanswered goals from Italy handed the U.S. National Futsal Team a tough defeat at the FIFA Futsal World Cup from the Maracanazinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Despite taking the lead in the first half, Keith Tozer's side was unable to hold on to the lead, and eventually the quality of the Italy side proved to be too much for the U.S. Mathematically there is still a chance of qualification for the next round, and the U.S. takes the court again on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they clash with Thailand. Kickoff from Rio de Janeiro is set for 9:30 a.m. ET, and the game can be seen live on ESPN360.com or followed via the MNT Blog.

“I can't fault the guys' effort; it was much better than we had in the first game,” said Tozer. “We played with passion, heart and did all the things we talked about. Credit goes to Italy though because they're a great team. We had the 1-0 lead but we gave up the ball in the middle for the goal and then they took advantage of a two-on-one. It set us back and gave them energy. That was a huge turning point and we just couldn't get back up the ladder."

After a performance on Tuesday where they were admittedly nervous and hesitant, the U.S. began the game against Italy confident and ready to play. The introduction of Andy Rosenband to the lineup, following his return from a holdover suspension he picked upduring qualifying, did much to inject energy into the U.S. side.

In the fifth minute, an outlet pass from goalkeeper Jeff Richey released midfielder Ptah Myers. Through on goal, Myers was brought down cynically by an Italian challenge, for which there was bizarrely no booking. Retribution would come from the restart though. Chile Farias took a shot that was deflected and Rosenband emerged at the far post to poke the ball past the wrong-footed Italian goalkeeper Alexandre Feller.

One goal was hardly going to decide the match, and going behind immediately ignited the Italians. Known for their tacit commitment to defense in the outdoor game, the Italian futsal team could not be more different. Their ball movement and fancy dribbling, particularly that of Adriano Foglia, excited the crowd and within minutes they were level.

In the eighth minute Saad Assis capitalized on an errant U.S. touch and played in Foglia who easily put the ball under the scrambling Richey to level the score.

Three minutes later, Italy took the lead, with the Azzurri again taking advantage of a U.S. giveaway. Assis was the architect once more, drawing the defense and playing Sandro Zanetti in the area for the easy finish.

The U.S. went into halftime knowing they would have to muster a team effort to overturn the scoreline, and early in the second half, they looked like they could have a chance. After some good buildup, midfielder Matthew Stewart found forward Brett Wiesner alone in the Italy penalty area, but his snap shot was turned away by the impressive Feller.

“In the second half we said 'we have to push guys forward,’” said Tozer. “We wanted to create more movement and we wanted to get guys down to the other end. I thought we played really well at times and we had some good opportunities.”

Defender Joe Hammes' shot was blocked well by a sliding Italian fullback and Feller was again at his best when he kept out U.S. captain, Pat Morris, in the 30th minute.

Minutes after, the U.S. were left to rue their missed chances as Patrick Nora extended Italy's lead. Grana played a short corner, catching the U.S. by surprise and Nora didn't think twice before hammering it at the U.S. goal. An unfortunate deflection off Wiesner wrongfooted Richey and the ball spun by the U.S. goalkeeper at the near post.

Foul trouble began to catch up with the U.S., though the Italians strangely remained out of the referees' notebooks. Six fouls sent Grana to the spot for a ten meter kick and he pounded it home in the 36th minute.

Just one minute later, Italy put the game out of reach, with Bertoni firing home at the near post to extend the lead to 5-1. There was still time in the end for Assis to add one more goal from the ten meter spot.

Despite the loss, there is still much to play for in Group B and the possibility of points in the next two games give the U.S. hope of qualifying for the next round.

"Anything can happen, and we're going to get ready for Thailand like we would any other team,” said Tozer. “We want to feel confident going into the game, and we'll prepare as hard as we can to be ready on Saturday."

Day 1 (Sept 30) game: Paraguay 5 USA 0

A tough result for the U.S. and it's not the way they wanted to begin their FIFA Futsal World Cup. With only a day off until their next match against Italy though, Keith Tozer's team will have to put this loss behind them as soon as possible. After all, there are still three games to go and qualification for the next round is still very much a possibility.

The USA came out looking to take the game to Paraguay in Rio. But after Matthew Stewart hit the woodwork early on, the rhythm of the game settled squarely with the South Americans.

José Luis Santander scored first and Fabio Alcaraz added a second before Robson Fernández made it 3-0 with the last kick of the first half. The Paraguayans then went on to kill off the game early in the second period with a goal from Carlos Chilavert and another Rene Villalba, who set up the fourth, to make it 5-0.

The result was an impressive one for the Paraguayans, even if it came against an obviously outgunned USA who were never quite up for the test.

In a hard fought opening match of the FIFA Futsal World Cup, the U.S. Futsal National Team lost to Paraguay, 5-0, at the Maracanãzinho in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Three first half goals and plenty of possession from the South American team meant that there was no way back for Keith Tozer's squad after an early deficit. The U.S. now faces a quick turnaround before its next match in the FIFA Futsal World Cup, and faces Italy on Oct. 2 at 11:30 a.m. ET. ESPN360.com will broadcast the game live, while Galavision broadcast the match on tape-delay at 12:30 a.m. ET/PT on Oct. 3.

“It was disappointing but Paraguay was the better team today,” said U.S. head coach Keith Tozer. “They were a little quicker, a little stronger, and they scored goals on their counter attacks, which is one of their biggest strengths. For most of these guys it was their first World Cup game and I think the tempo and the physicality surprised us a little bit. We got our feet wet though, and its important now to move forward."

The U.S. created the first meaningful chance of the game just seconds after the opening kickoff. A combination freed up Matthew Stewart just inside the Paraguay penalty area, and his left footed shot crashed off the post before being cleared.

Minutes later, Paraguay broke through when Jose Luis Santander’s snap shot in the seventh minute caromed off the post and rebounded fortuitously back to the forward. Santander reacted quickest and shrugged off the challenge of forward Chile Farias before finishing under U.S. goalkeeper Jeff Richey.

Paraguay got stronger throughout the half, with Richey making save after save to keep the U.S. close. A collision between defender Joe Hammes and forward Jamar Beasley freed up Jose Rotella for a breakaway, but Richey reacted well to take the ball from the Paraguayan's feet. Richey was again called into action, saving a Ferandez blast with his chest in the 16th minute.

Eventually, Paraguay doubled their lead through a lightning quick counter attack in the 17th minute. Walter Villalba pounced on a loose ball and dribbled into space before slipping a pass to Fabio Alcaraz who finished with his first touch.

With seconds remaining in the first half, Paraguay scored again, this time through Robson Fernandez. The burly forward took a Villalba pass with his back to goal, before turning exquisitely and smashing the ball into the roof of the net. Coming just 11 seconds before the halftime buzzer, the goal was a tough blow to take for the U.S. side, who trailed, 3-0, heading into the locker room.

While the U.S. continued to persevere as they searched for their offense. Paraguay added two more goals in the second half, through Carlos Chilavert and Rene Villalba. Chilavert, the Paraguay captain, took advantage of a U.S. defensive giveaway to put his side four goals up. Villalba tallied the final score when he stole the ball from Richey and finished into an open net in the 39th minute.

With just one day off before the U.S. faces Italy on Oct. 2, Tozer insists that the focus for the team must be on moving forward.

“I think it can be seen as a benefit [to play Italy so soon],” said Tozer. “We'll watch this tape to see what we can learn, but we definitely will put this game behind us as we get our game plan together [for Thursday's match against Italy].”

One positive that the U.S. can take from the game is the knowledge that an opening game loss does not necessarily mean the end of a World Cup campaign. Tozer needs look no further than his 2004 team, which qualified for the second round after succumbing to defeat in the first match, 6-3, against Italy.

“Unlike in 2004, we have four matches this time around so there's still a lot of Futsal to be played,” Tozer said. “In a group this tough we couldn't really expect to go 4-0 even if we would have liked to. We just need to put this behind us and learn from it. The big thing is that we've now played in a World Cup game. We have that experience and I think we will learn from it going forward."
