Joshua Berrios is a rising star in both soccer and Futsal (indoor soccer) but a $500 yearly cash grant from The Smith Family has also ensured he can kick goals off the field.
Mum Cynthia said the money enabled her to buy his school books and Caroline Spring College uniform.
“It’s very helpful,” she said.
“(As a single parent) things are a little bit difficult.
“I am very proud of him.
Hopefully his dream of playing for Australia comes true.
“He’s got it in him, Josh is very dedicated.” Joshua, a striker, has recently returned from the Football Federation National Futsal Championships in Canberra, where he put in some strong performances.
He also plays outdoor soccer for South Melbourne.
“Futsal is more of a fun thing but my main focus is outdoor,” Joshua said.
“I want to take my soccer as far as I can.” Joshua’s coach of two years - Wael Gharzeddine - said the 16-year-old had the world at his quick-moving feet.
“Josh is one of the most talented young players in the state,” Mr Gharzeddine said.
“He has good control and you can see coming from a South American background this influence in the way he plays the game.” “He is comfortable with the ball and knows how to take a player on.
“This Smith Family scholarship is great for him to help him reach his potential.” The Smith Family’s Back to School Appeal will run until the end of March, and aims to secure an extra 3000 sponsors across Australia to help more children in need.
It costs less than $1 a day to sponsor an Australian child through The Smith Family.
