The Sunshine Coasts under-11 team has won the Regional Futsal Tournament, beating Logan Logan City in the grand final.
FUTSAL: The Sunshine Coast under-11 boys futsal side ruled the net at the Regional Futsal Tournament over the Easter long weekend.
The side downed favourites Logan City to win a nail-biting grand final.
The Coast youngsters dominated the competition, breezing through the preliminary games on Saturday and Sunday with commanding results.
They continued their successful run into Monday, easily defeating teams in the quarter and semi-finals to claim a spot in the grand final.
Coach Matthew Renkovetsky described the grand final as a very tense contest that fluctuated from end to end, along with the score.
“At one stage, when Logan was 3-1 in front, they held a commanding position and it looked like it was all over, but our boys just took it to a new level,” he said.
The tension continued after a flurry of goals from both teams in the dying stages forced the match into the golden goal period, with the scores level at 5-5.
The tough battle ended with the left foot of Kobe Fuller, who volleyed the winning goal into the back of the net.
Renkovetsky said it was the first time he had coached a Sunshine Coast team and he felt overwhelmed with the victory.
“I went down there just to be competitive,” he said.
“Not in my wildest dreams did I think we would win this tournament.
“Days later, it still hasn’t sunk in, but the emotions were just very high – just euphoria and probably a sense of disbelief that my eight little boys from Sunny Coast have knocked off the best of the best.” Renkovetsky described the left-footed volley from Fuller as superb – hit surprisingly well considering Fuller is a right-foot kicker.
“It was a cracking shot: perfectly timed on a very difficult angle,” Renkovetsky said.
“As soon as that ball went in, the game was over and everyone just stormed the court.
“The arms went up and the tears were flowing and there were smiles.
